Helen McGuinness originally qualified in 1984, a time when Beauty Therapy included
detailed study of chemistry as part of the
syllabus. She began practising commercially
and opened her own Salon in 1985, which she
still actively works in today. After gaining her Teaching, assessing and verifying qualifications
over several years, as well as running her
own commercial practice, she taught at a
number of large colleges in the South of
England. Between 1990 and 1993 she also
incorporated working as the Southern England
verifier for VTCT, one of the main awarding
bodies for beauty and holistic
qualifications in the UK today. In 1992, she
opened her own training school, which celebrated its 20th birthday in 2012.
Due to Helen’s growing reputation in the
beauty training industry, she was approached
in 1995 by Hodder and Stoughton to write the
first of a number of books that went on to
become best sellers. That first book was
Anatomy & Physiology – therapy basics and it
is now in its 4th edition. Following the
success of her first book, Helen was
commissioned to write a series of further
books, which included Aromatherapy, Facials,
Holistic Therapies, Baby Massage and the
ever popular Indian Head Massage, currently
being revised for its 4th edition.
Alongside her series of best selling books,
Helen has also developed a range of over 25
professional training DVDs, that she
personally demonstrates and narrates in
‘real time’. Both her books and DVDs
continue to be in demand globally and are
used in many colleges under license as part
of their learning programmes.
In an executive capacity, Helen has been
contracted professionally for Baby Massage
teaching in a number of the UK’s PCT’s and
has given guest lectures at Hospitals and
for Blue Chip companies such as Cunard.
She has lectured overseas, presented at Spa
Conferences in both Florida and Las Vegas
and worked with a Skin Care company based in
New York. Helen has also presented for HABIA
as a member of the Beauty Skills team at
Professional Beauty Excel.
Today, Helen remains very much a hands on
educator and has students from Asia, the
Middle East, Europe and the Americas as well
as the UK where she is based, come to
specifically learn under her expert
tutorledge. Since opening her School in
1992, she has seen in the region of 10,000
students pass through her doors.
Helen’s philosophy has always been to help
others and develop them into competent
therapists and whilst she is a very busy
person and much in demand, she always
remains a down to earth person who is very
approachable and always willing to help her
students with their development. To see her
students succeed in their learning and be
able to follow a professional career in the
industry is what gives Helen most pleasure.
Helen currently lives in Hampshire in the UK
and is married with a daughter called Grace.
